Etchu Yatsuo is best known for the Owara Kaze no Bon festival. In the hamlet of Fukushima, a few minutes by car from the old town, stands this small room-only inn with just four rooms. Its tatami parlors keep their original tokonoma alcoves, ranma transoms, and black-lacquered coffered ceilings—craftsmanship of a kind that can no longer be built today.
Take off your shoes at the stone-floored entrance and sleep on futon laid side by side on tatami, in soft light filtering through shoji screens—up to six guests can share a single room.
Free parking on the grounds sits outside the traffic restrictions, even during the three days of Owara. Leave the car and walk to the festival. Owara evenings run late into the night—staying this close, you can watch until late and still walk back.
